Playmat size guide: which format for Riftbound, and why 60 × 35 cm

Two numbers decide whether a playmat works for you: the surface you actually need to lay cards out on, and the space the table gives you. Everything after that is preference.

The 60 × 35 cm format

Every mat in our Riftbound collection is printed at 60 × 35 cm, and it is the format the collection is built around: the card areas sit inside the printed surface instead of spilling over the edge onto bare table. You get roughly 2 100 cm² of playing surface, which is enough for a deck, a discard pile and the row of cards in front of you without anything hanging off.

It is also the size that travels. Rolled, a 60 × 35 cm mat fits in a side pocket or a tube without being the largest thing you carry. Larger formats do not.

Where the bigger formats make sense

Square mats around 60 × 60 cm exist for games that use a wide central board, and oversized mats of 90 cm and up are really table covers: two players share one surface. They are excellent at home on a fixed table, and awkward everywhere else. If you mostly play at a shop or at events, the extra surface is space you have to negotiate with the person sitting opposite you.

The practical test is not the mat, it is the table. Measure the depth of the table you play on most often. Under 40 cm of usable depth per player and a 60 × 35 cm mat is already the right call.

Mouse mat sizes are a different question

If what you want is a desk surface rather than a play surface, the sizing logic inverts: you are filling a desk, not fitting a game. Our custom mouse mat runs from 18 × 22 cm up to 55 × 100 cm for that reason. The 30 × 60 cm and 40 × 90 cm sizes are the two that cover most desks; below 30 cm you are buying a mouse pad, not a desk mat.

What size does not fix

A large mat with a soft surface still drags on card corners, and a large mat with unfinished edges still curls. Format decides whether the mat fits your table. Thickness, surface and edge finish decide whether you enjoy using it. We wrote about those separately, in playmat thickness and what makes a playmat last.

Short version

  • 60 × 35 cm — the default for Riftbound, fits any table, travels well.
  • Around 60 × 60 cm — for games with a wide central zone, at home.
  • 90 cm and up — a shared table cover, not a personal mat.
  • Desk sizes — measure the desk, then round down once.

If you already know the format and just want your own artwork on it, that happens in the Studio: you upload an image, place it in the 60 × 35 cm frame, and we print that file.
