Playmat thickness: what 2 mm actually changes when you play
Thickness is the specification people notice last and feel first. It does not change how the mat looks. It changes how cards behave on it.
2 mm
The common thickness, and the one we print. Enough padding to let you slide a fingernail under a card and lift it cleanly, thin enough that the mat lies flat almost immediately after unrolling and rolls down to a slim tube. You still feel the table through it, which most players prefer: the mat cushions the cards without making the surface feel spongy.
The trade-off is that 2 mm does nothing to hide a bad table. On a surface with a visible seam or a warped panel, you will feel the defect through the mat.
3 mm
Noticeably softer. Cards sink very slightly, which makes single-card pickup easier and shuffling on the mat harder — the surface absorbs the riffle instead of letting cards spring back. Hides an uneven table better. Heavier to carry, slower to flatten out, and the extra bulk shows when you roll it.
Worth it if you play on bad tables, or if you have trouble lifting cards off a firm surface.
5 mm and up
This is desk-mat territory rather than play-mat territory. It is comfortable under wrists and excellent under a keyboard. For cards it is usually too much: the surface gives enough that cards tilt when you press near an edge, and precise placement gets fiddly. These mats also take a long time to stop remembering the roll.
Thickness is not durability
A thick mat is not a long-lived mat. What decides lifespan is the edge finish and the quality of the bond between fabric and rubber — a 5 mm mat with raw cut edges will fray before a 2 mm mat that is stitched on all four sides. We go into that in what makes a playmat last.
How to choose in one question
Do you shuffle on the mat? If yes, stay at 2 mm. If you never shuffle on it and your table is uneven, 3 mm is a real improvement. Above that, you are choosing a desk mat, and the sizes that make sense change too — see the size guide.
Every mat in the Riftbound collection is 2 mm microfibre on a non-slip rubber base, 60 × 35 cm, printed at 300 dpi. If you want the same build with your own artwork on it, that is the Studio.
